CHAPTER 22

Lane had his cell out as they were making their way back. “What do I do? Call 911?” Casey snatched the phone away from him so fast, he was left with his hand out, empty, and a stunned look on his face.

“You're not calling anybody until we're out of here.” Lane grabbed his phone back. “Have you gone nuts?” “You can't,” she said, calming down. “We're not supposed to be here. Wait until we leave and then call. Or drive into town and talk to them in person. Just don't mention anything about us.”

“But you were with us when we found the body, they'll ask—” “It doesn't matter if we were there or not,” Maryann broke in. “The cops don't have to know. We had nothing to do with him. You don't even know him! We're not connected, so forget we were here.”

She heard Casey make a small sound at that. Casey wouldn't like Lane to forget she was there, but tough shit, they were not getting involved.

“It doesn't seem right, you taking off like this,” Bailey said. “We could use the moral support, at least.”

Then Casey did something with her eyes that Maryann could not believe. She turned directly to Lane and said in a syrupy voice, “Y'all could come over to our cabin tonight for some moral support.”

“You want to entertain now, Casey? That's just gonna call attention to us,” Maryann couldn't believe Casey's thought process, but stopped herself and changed directions. “Listen, you want to blow it, go ahead.” She was at least glad to see that the boys didn't seem enthused by the invitation. All she was interested in was extricating herself from any involvement with the cops.

When they finally came into view of the lake and the boys' cabin again, Lane and Bailey ran ahead, calling for Jeff. There was still the possibility that he had gone on an early-morning walk and had made his way home.

And as soon as the boys ran off Casey was back at it. “See? We can still have a good time. After they go to town, they can come back and we'll—” But she stopped at the sight of Lane and Bailey returning. Both looked more worried, if that was possible.

“Still no sign of him,” Lane said.

Casey opened her mouth as if to start making plans in spite of it, but Maryann said quickly, “Let's stop talking and get going.”

The sky had grown darker. A zigzag of lightning suddenly sizzled across the water.

“You better let us drive you back,” Bailey said.

“No, no, you need to start to town before it rains and the roads turn to mush,” Casey said, to Maryann's relief. “We need to get the boat away from here. If the police come, they'll ask questions and find out it's my family's boat and wonder what it's doing over on this side of the lake.” The big surprise had been a flop. Nothing had turned out the way Casey planned.

They hurried to the bateau as thunder cracked.
